FORGET Monaco, Watchet was the place to be on Sunday when West Somerset's own top class racers geared up for the ever popular Watchet Live Wheelbarrow Race. The chequered flags were accompanied by generous amounts of beer as the 24 teams battled for pole position on the starting line. Around 500 spectators turned out to cheer on the competitors and to be wowed by their fancy dress outfits, as well as their skills and dexterity. The race leaders focused on the job in hand and made seven pit-stops for a swift half before jumping back into the vehicles to finish the race. The record race time of five minutes and 18 seconds remained intact, with this year's winners the Pigeon Catchers, AKA Luke and Sam Coulson, crossing the finishing line in six minutes and 11 seconds. The fastest ladies' team home was the World Cup WAGS of Harriet Gibbard and Niki Stevens in nine minutes and 50 seconds. The fastest mixed team was Ian Marsdon and Karen Bennett - who had the class all to themselves when their fellow qualifiers failed to turn up! Graeme and Philip Abbott-Garner went away with the best fancy dress title as wacky racers Dick Dastardly and Mutley. Organisers from Watchet Live thanked everyone who supported the event. Spokesman Jackie Bale said: "A big thank you to all the competitors and the massive crowd of supporters who helped make this 2014 event possibly the best attended to date. "The bucket collection and donations surpassed itself and will be used to help fund this year's carnival day on July 27."
