EACH week in the Free Press we look back at what made the news 150, 100, 50 and 25 years ago. Here is a sample of the items featuring in the This Was The News column this week.

150 years ago – June 19th 1869

The new Baptist chapel in Stogumber, capable of seating 250, was officially opened. The contractor was Mr John Nurcombe, of Wiveliscombe, and the work was completed in nine months.

100 years ago – June 21st 1919

A Peace Celebration Choir, 50 strong, had been formed in Watchet and was practising for the peace celebrations under the conductorship of Mr J Chapman. The accompanist was Miss Drake.

50 years ago – June 21st 1969

Lord St Audries made a presentation of an inscribed clock to Mr Arthur Redding who was retiring after more than 45 years’ service to Nether Stowey Village Hall. Mr Redding was a blacksmith and his many activities included bellringing and singing in St Mary’s Church choir.

25 years ago – June 24th 1994

Police and the national park authority were launching a major campaign targeting the “beasts of Exmoor” – thieves who stole from parked cars. Visitors reported hundreds of thefts each year. It was hoped the Exmoor Eye campaign would draw in ramblers and other regular users of the park.
