TRIBUTES have been paid online after the sudden death of well-known West Somerset scouting leader Stephen Sharp.
Mr Sharp, who was a trustee of Somerset County Scout Council, collapsed and died at work last week.
He had been actively involved in scouting for nearly 50 years, having joined Exmoor Cubs, and more recently was county activities programme lead.
A Somerset Scouts spokesperson said: “We are deeply saddened to share the news that Stephen collapsed at work and, despite the brave efforts of First Aiders and paramedics, sadly passed away.
“Words cannot begin to describe how his family are feeling at this time, but we wanted everybody who knew Stephen to be aware of this devastating loss.
“Stephen was a kind and gentle man who would help anybody.
“His main passion was sailing, though he could turn his hand to just about anything.
“He will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.”
Dozens of people took to social media to express their sadness at hearing the news and condolences to Mr Sharp’s family.
Alys Lacey said: “Stephen will be missed by many.
“He had a great sense of humour and I will miss ‘annoying’ him at county events.
“Sending our love and thoughts to Jane, Trish, Andy, Amy and the rest of his wider family.”
Alyson Claydon-Mills said: “What terrible news.
“Happy memories from the boating days at Watchet Sea Scouts.
“Will be missed.”
Mandy Manley said: “I am so sorry to hear this dreadfully sad news.
“I have lots of happy memories with Stephen during scouting days, such a lovely, kind, happy man.
“My thoughts are with you Jane and the family.”
Sue Gannon said: “Rest in peace, Stephen.
“I only knew you for a short time, through Jane, but you were indeed a kind and gentle soul.”
