COASTGUARDS in West Somerset are holding a recruitment event on Saturday (January 31) to attract new volunteers to replace some who have retired.

Members of both the Watchet and Minehead Coastguard teams will be at the Coastguard station on the Esplanade, Watchet, to meet people from 10 am to 3 pm.

A spokesperson said: “Following the retirement of some of our long-standing team members we have vacancies on our team.

“Our Coastguard rescue service is made up of volunteers who carry out rescues and help those in distress around our coast.

“Anybody interested in joining our teams can come and see us, find out more about this voluntary role, meet with one of our senior coastal operations officers, and see some of the equipment we use.

“As a volunteer Coastguard rescue officer, you could be involved in a range of situations, from mud, cliff, and water rescues to searches for missing people.

“Volunteering with us is a rewarding role that supports and gives back to your local community.

“You will receive regular training and be part of a team that works together to save lives.

“You can make a real difference and help to save lives.

“All our coastguard rescue officers complete essential training before joining the team.

“We provide all the equipment and protective clothing required for the role and you will also receive regular training to keep your skills up to date.”

Volunteers need to be aged 18 years or older, have a full driving licence, and live close to their rescue station.

They need to be ‘reasonably fit’, weigh 120 kg or less, and have a waist measurement of 110 cm or less.

More details of the role, which is unpaid, although volunteers can claim an amount for their time and expenses, and how to apply, are available on the Coastguard website.
