SIR — It is wonderful news that the Minehead Development Trust has reached a stage where it can appeal for public support to save the old hospital as an asset for the community, housing facilities such as the library, the information centre, and a town museum.

Besides occupying a prime position in The Avenue, the old hospital is important in its own right.

Completed in 1889, this beautiful building was designed by Piers St Aubyn as a Town Hall to celebrate Minehead's new status as an attractive and popular seaside resort.

The old hospital should be the jewel in the crown of Minehead's town centre. Close to shops, cafés, parking and the theatre, it could become a hub for the whole community and offer indoor recreation on a rainy day.

Now it is up to us, residents of Minehead and district, to show the Heritage Lottery Fund that this project has widespread public support. Otherwise this once-in-a-lifetime chance may be missed. The trust's Appeal for Pledges forms are available in the town and district council offices.
