WEST Somerset was hit by Monsoon-style weather on Sunday (September 17) causing widespread flooding and many roads to be closed.

Bus services were cancelled and West Somerset Railway train services were suspended.

The A39 at Carhampton was impassable and Blue Anchor station was flooded and suffered signal box damage.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service was receiving so many calls that it asked people only to ring if there was an actual risk to life.

South Western Ambulance Services NHS Trust paramedics were battling to make their way through to calls and advised floodwater was ‘deep and fast moving’.

Some shops in Minehead were flooded and there were road closures in Townsend Road, Ponsford Road, The Avenue, Alcombe Road, Park Street from the junction of Parkhouse Road, King George Road, Mark Road, Friday Street, and Bampton Street.

Avon and Somerset Police advised motorists to avoid driving through large bodies of standing water and to take extra care in the conditions.
