TROPIQUARIA'S resident racoon Rocky certainly has the summer heatwave licked, cooling down with his favourite ice-lollies.

The Washford zoo has had to make sure its various feathered, furred and finned occupants cope with the recent hot weather.

And with temperatures regularly tipping the mercury in the top 20s, Rocky has been taking no chances.

"We all need to be careful in the sun and there is nothing like a thirst quenching fruity lolly to keep a racoon cool!" zoo director Chris Moiser said.

Other animals have also been given ice-blocks - with the tapir getting fruit frozen into his and the zoo's resident otters have enjoyed a selection of frozen shellfish treats.

Even the zoo's fishy inhabitants have been feeling the heat and extra ventilation has been provided to ensure the underground aquariums keep cool.

Mr Moiser said staff were making even more regular checks on their charges to make sure they had plenty of shade and fresh water while the heatwave continued.

He added: "During hot weather the RSPCA always draw attention to the dangers of hot cars for dogs and the RSPB will suggest putting extra water out for wild birds too.

"But zoo animals also need extra care and pose challenges for their keepers.

"We have to consider the heat issues and the way that they affect the animals' biology."
