I write to take the Free Press to task for not reporting the death on March 3 of Peter Hurford, a Minehead born boy who made very, very good as one of the finest organists of our time.

He was particularly renowned as a Bach player from Toronto to Sydney and Washington to Germany. He also performed many recitals locally.

I can testify to his international acclaim for whilst on an assignment at Kharkov, Ukraine, I attended an Easter Day recital given at the newly re-consecrated Orthodox Monastery by one of Russia’s pre-eminent organists.

During a conversation with him afterwards I mentioned I had recently heard Peter playing, at which point his eyes lit up and he told me he was his hero.

As we said goodbye, he was murmuring Peter Hurford, Peter Hurford!

For so much pleasure given, Peter Hurford deserves to be remembered.

There are a number of excellent BBC/Decca recordings as “cheap as chips”! Enjoy.
