AN open garden afternoon at Maundown, near Wiveliscombe, has raised nearly £1200 for SSAFA – the armed forces charity.
The annual event, now in its 16th year, saw 160 visitors recently at the two acres of hillside garden at Burges Meadow, Maundown, home of Pauline and Bob Homeshaw.
The couple originally created the gardens from an empty field, and visitors enjoyed viewing over 100 varieties of interesting and unusual trees, as well as shrubs, borders, ponds and a large glasshouse – and there were cream teas and stalls.
Over the years, Bob and Pauline, who is a volunteer publicity officer for SSAFA Somerset, have raised about £20,000 for the charity – the UK’s oldest military charity, which provides lifelong support for members of the Forces and their families.
