A TOUCH of Christmas magic came to Wiveliscombe when a group of Ukrainian performers delighted a packed audience in St Andrew’s Church with haunting songs and carols, and a buffet with traditional food.

Organised by Ukrainian fund-raising organisation, Zerno Aid for Ukraine, the performers dressed in traditional costume and gave the audience a taste of Christmas in their home country.

A moving video played throughout, showing life in Ukraine and including heartfelt messages of thanks from soldiers on the frontline.

The Christmas concert was put together by its two lead singers, Nadiia Botvynovska and Bohdana Kuripko, both refugees whose husbands are fighting in Ukraine.

The pair initially lived in the Westcountry and now live in London, travelling to Wiveliscombe to take part along with other volunteers from the area.

Both singers and Galyna Tryndyuk, co-ordinator of Zerno, gave an emotional ‘thank you’ to Wivey Welcomes Refugees, St Andrew’s Church, and the audience.

Galyna said: “People are extremely supportive and it is a very special venue and atmosphere here.

“All who took part in the evening are Ukrainian refugees with families still there, and are very much aware of the situation in real life from those who experience the horrors of the war.

“We thank everybody who came to the event to support Ukraine and our fund-raising efforts, and all artists, who dedicated their weekend to rehearsing and performing for free in front of such an amazing audience.

“All funds raised will go to buy foot and hand heaters, generators, power packs, an Eco flow – everything that will bring warmth and light to people of Ukraine.”
