SIR — I wonder if any of your readers could solve a small family mystery.

The photograph of a Police Constable (collar number 297.S) was in my late father’s wallet but he did not recall who it was or how he came by it.

I can only assume the PC was somehow connected to my father’s brother, William Percy Everall who, although Shropshire born, spent most of his life in Somerset and lived at 10 Station Terrace, Minehead.

The helmet badge shows a dragon rampant against a pillar, or some such, so I firmly believe that the constable was part of the Somerset force.

Some years ago I approached the Somerset police but they said that they could not help, citing confidentiality and the fact that collar numbers were re-used from time to time.

It may be that the constable was related to William Everall’s wife, Dorothy Alice (nee Croker), who died in 1959.

If any of your readers can throw any light on the photograph, I should be pleased to hear from them. The photograph is printed on a postcard and there is no photographer’s mark on the back apart from the letters Ltd with a letter K superimposed - presumably the manufacturers of the card.

In addition to the photograph of the constable there is also another one of a couple on their wedding day. (Inside the Free Press)

I cannot be certain whether this is of William Percy and Dorothy Alice or where it was taken. Was it at Station Terrace?

Again, if anyone can help I should be pleased to hear from them – my email address is [email protected].

Peter J Everall,

Telford,

Shropshire.
