A BUS service running between Taunton and Butlin’s in Minehead has been dubbed “unfit for purpose” by the local MP.
The number 28, which is operated by First Bus, has been hit by several cancellations over the past few weeks, most recently on June 28.
Reports have also been received that the bus is regularly “overrun” with holidaymakers at key travel times for locals.
Minehead’s Somerset Cllrs Andrew Hadley and Mandy Chilcott raised concerns in May when they met with Butlin’s resort director Craig Goodwin and his senior staff and had ‘a constructive meeting’.
Cllr Chilcott said she was continuing to look into the issue of changeover day buses which were seemingly overcrowded despite a promise to put on extra services at peak times.
MP for Tiverton and Minehead, Rachel Gilmour said: “The Number 28 First Bus service between Minehead and Taunton is unreliable, overcrowded, and not fit for purpose.
“These issues cannot continue, which is why I have asked First Bus for an urgent meeting to discuss what they can do to bring this service up to the standard that is required.
“Constituents have also informed me about the significant issues posed on changeover days with the heavy volume of holidaymakers using the Number 28 service to go to and from Butlin’s, which is why I have also asked for a meeting with their leadership, so that we can work together on a solution.
“I will continue to press these companies for change, along with my Transport Advisor, David Northey. I hope that they will listen and make progress swiftly towards a solution.”
Butlin's previously stated that any decisions about additional capacity would be made by the operator.
First Bus has said it will work with Somerset Council on traffic flow and roadworks and that it is investigating a new electric bus which should provide more space for additional passengers, due to start in July.
A First Bus in Somerset spokesperson: “At the heart of what we do is a commitment to delivering a reliable, high-quality service for our local community. We know recent disruptions have caused frustration, and we’d like to apologise to our customers.
“We’re working closely with Somerset Council to manage traffic and roadworks, and we’re pleased to announce that new, larger electric buses will join the 28 route this July and August. These will include more space and luggage racks to improve things for our customers.
“We welcome feedback and look forward to meeting Rachel Gilmour to better understand local needs and how we can keep improving for her constituents.”
