Re Graham Sizer’s letter regarding how West Somerset Council will replant the flower beds in the future in Blenheim Gardens (Free Press August 11), I too am very concerned that it might put in perennials and shrubs in order to save on maintenance and watering.

In my view this will increase the amount of work that will need to be done as they will need dead-heading in the summer to keep them flowering, pruning to stop them getting too big and cutting back in the winter to encourage new growth for next year, and although less thirsty they will still need watering.

We could end up with beds that will look interesting as such but not pretty with no vibrant colours.

There is nothing better than to sit by the colourful flower beds and admire the bright colours in summer or walk past the hyacinths and smell the perfume in winter.

I can see that eventually they could end up like the seafront beds, grassed over and a place for dogs to use as toilets.

Already some of the beds in Blenheim are used by children to play hide and seek or hang from trees, leaving hard earth paths going through them.

I cannot praise enough the town centre and islands - they look stunning and a real pleasure to look at.

Please, please keep our Blenheim Gardens looking pretty not just green.
