SIR — It is with delight that we learnt the inspector had upheld West Somerset Council's refusal for the use of water reed thatch on a cottage in Vicarage Road, Minehead.

Our society has long fought for the rigorous protection of Minehead's heritage and for the use of appropriate vernacular materials where available (in this case combed wheat reed) for restoration work.

When a person buys a listed building they take on the responsibility of its heritage protection, acting as a guardian for its future preservation.

This building was listed for its special architectural and historic qualities which it is essential to maintain.

Minehead is classed as an Outstanding Heritage Settlement and this status makes it imperative that its best architectural features, be they buildings, walls, monuments etc, are carefully preserved for future generations to enjoy.

They also make the town a far more attractive place for tourists to visit. Heritage tourism is big business - ignore it at your peril.

So congratulations to West Somerset Council for ensuring that Minehead's heritage continues to be properly protected. When re-thatched, this cottage will present an educational opportunity for the subtle differences between water reed and combed wheat reed thatch to be fully appreciated.

Mrs S Bainbridge,

Minehead Conservation Society.
