A SERIES of free bird walks is being hosted at some of the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust’s (WWT) reserves up and down the country, including Steart Marshes.

The events are being held to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the charity’s vice-president David Lindo being known as ‘The Urban Birder’.

He will lead a walk at Steart on Sunday, July 19, from 10 am to 1 pm for both WWT members and non-members of all ages and abilities who will be welcome to join in.

Places are limited to the first 20 applicants who will need to register for a free space through the charity’s website.

A spokesperson said: “Join David for some smiles, tales from concrete jungles, and, of course, to learn more about birds.

“Please note we will be walking on the reserve for the duration of the time, so please dress accordingly.

“We advise wearing sturdy boots and dressing for the weather, as well as bringing plenty of water and suncream.”

The walk will start from the main WWT car park at Steart Marshes.

The following Sunday, July 26, a drop-in session is being held between 10 am and 1 pm with a free workshop led by artist Margaret Micklewright for people to capture the nature of the saltmarsh in a clay bubble.

The workshop, for which donations will be accepted, will look closely at the vegetation, bird life, and creatures which call Steart Marshes their home and people will decorate a clay circle to capture what they see and hear.

They will press grasses and other vegetation into clay, draw bird footprints or insects, to make a composition which reflects their view of the saltmarsh.

The workshop is open to all ages and all materials will be provided, with participants meeting in the nature reserve’s roundhouse.
