A LEADING West Somerset field study centre is taking part in a breakthrough new scheme to give schoolchildren more opportunities to spend time in the countryside.

Nettlecombe Court, near Williton, will be hosting residential trips for youngsters as part of the Field Studies Council’s new ‘Every Child Outdoors’ scheme, a £20,000 appeal to ensure more youngsters have an opportunity to go on school trips.

A spokesperson for the charity said: “Research suggests nearly half of all children in the UK are currently missing out on school trips due to cost, a situation the Field Studies Council says risks limiting the aspirations of many young people.”

The charity, which helps more than 100,000 youngsters benefit from outdoor education every year, is calling on businesses and individuals to support its latest appeal.

Fund-raising manager Gemma Edmonds said: “No young person should miss out on an outdoor learning trip due to the cost, but many children are being left behind due to their personal circumstances.

“They are missing out on the chance to get outside and explore, to get muddy and wet, and to learn about nature.

“Our latest appeal ‘Every Child Outdoors’ aims to try and address this disadvantage gap and we are calling on businesses and individuals to donate to the fund to help us support more schools and pupils to access outdoor learning trips.”

The ‘Every Child Outdoors’ appeal will directly support schools by reducing the cost of a school trip to one of the charity’s residential centres, including Nettlecombe Court, or by directly funding free places to ensure a whole class can attend.

If the appeal reaches its £20,000 target, then it has the potential to fund 185 day trips and a further 60 overnight residential stays for pupils.

Anybody who wants to support and/or donate to the appeal should visit the charity’s website.
