A choral and orchestral work by Carhampton composer Emily Feldberg, premièred in Minehead three years ago by local performers, has been released on YouTube.

The work, Fragments: Voices from the First World War, was written to mark the centenary of the end of World War One and released in time for this year’s Remembrance.

It brings together themes of struggle, loss, comradeship and hope for the future: themes which are as relevant now as they were 100 years ago.

“This is an important time to mark remembrance in every sense as we continue to feel the effects of the Covid pandemic,” said Emily.

“It is particularly poignant to watch this performance and remember a time, not so long ago, when we could come together to make music without risk to ourselves and each other.”

The Minehead première of Fragments took place in November 2018 and was repeated, by popular demand, a year later. The YouTube release shows the second performance, conducted by the composer and featuring professional baritone Jamie Rock.

The choir and orchestra for both performances featured amateur musicians drawn from the South West and beyond, supported in 2019 by several professional instrumentalists, with both performances being part-funded by the Arts Council.
