THE highest level of the Somerset Coastal Champions award has gone to Dunster First School.

It is the first school ever to achieve the status.

The award is run by Somerset Wildlife Trust in partnership with Litter Free Coast and Sea Somerset and Carrymoor Environmental Trust.

It recognises work the school has done and changes it has made on campus to demonstrate best practices to reduce litter, maintain local bathing water quality, and protect coastal nature and wildlife.

Headteacher Paul James said: “I am so proud of the eco activity of our children and eco reps.

“They are always finding new ways to help care for our planet and environment.

“It is impressive to see such young people take such an active and mature role in setting an example for our community.

“As a school we are immensely proud of them and our eco leader Mrs Turton for her hard work with the children and external agencies.”
