SIR — As part of the presentation of Watchet Station for the last 12 months, we have had two 1940s bicycles chained to the bike racks on the platform.
On Monday night/Tuesday morning last week they were wrenched from their place and thrown onto the railway line.
This is the first act of damage that has occurred for some considerable time - much to the disappointment of all of the volunteers.
They give up their valuable time to operate the station and platform for thousands of visitors that arrive in the town and do not like to see their work destroyed.
The Friends of Watchet Station are appealing to the community for any information about this incident and also asking for your vigilence when around the station to help prevent further vandalism like this.
It is our aim in 2009 to get the hat-trick of awards for the Best Kept Station on the West Somerset Railway, having received it in 2007 and 2008. We can do without anyone spoiling our chances by carrying out such wanton destruction as that with the bicycles.
Therefore, if you can help, please contact the police at Williton or telephone 07825 125104 to speak to the officer on the case.
Thanking everyone in Watchet in anticipation.
Mike Buttel,
Chairman,
Friends of Watchet Station.
