SIR — I have one point of disgust and one of praise from my experience trying to drive on the A39 from Bridgwater to Minehead on Saturday night in the torrential rain and floods.

Many drivers were sensibly cautious but, as I approached a flooded area on a curve in the road, I had to move to the shallower water in the right hand carriageway to skirt deep water on my side.

Suddenly an empty lorry came hurtling towards the bend and, with cars behind me too close, forced me into the deep water where my car, inevitably, stopped.

The disgust is for the driver of the lorry who did not bother to slow at a hazard.

While I was waiting in the dark with water lapping in the foot-wells, other lorries slowed carefully and their wash lapped the sills no more than that of passing cars.

I sheltered in the back of the car for two hours waiting for rescue services who could not reach me because they were stuck on impassable roads in both directions.

My praise is for the generous couple who towed me to dry ground, put me up for the night and, miraculously, helped me to start the next morning.

My thanks to them.

Tilla Brading,

Minehead.
