MINEHEAD Barbarians convincingly chalked up their largest winning margin of the season with a 72-0 slaughter of Castle Cary.

Cary, in their promotion season, were never a match for the well-drilled Minehead side, who ran in a total of 12 tries.

The first half scorers were Biff Floyd, with only his second 1st XV try, A Ford and C Lock, who weighed in with a brace. J McGuinness converted twice, and Minehead went in at half-time with a healthy 24-0 lead.

S Land began the scoring in what was to be a second half rout, then winger D Webber grabbed the next five tries, taking only two minutes to claim his hat-trick.

J Houston ghosted through at speed for number 11, and C Howells finished a good move to touch down the final try.

McGuinness added a further four conversions to complete the scoring.

The York House Inn man of the match was Biff Floyd for a fine all round display at loosehead prop.

Castle Cary II 7

Minehead II 70

Minehead II showed their class as they romped to an easy 70-7 win away to Castle Cary II.

R Gay led a strong team out and Minehead took only two minutes to score the first of their 12 tries when T Pilcher took an inside pass from fly half J Littlefield to score unopposed under the posts.

The powerful running of B Baker, R Smith and R Cox put Castle Cary on the back foot for most of the match as they drove straight and hard at their pack.

Minehead not only drove directly at their opponents but foraged and supported each other at all times with P Disney, P Sullivan and D Bishop always to the fore.

Minehead's superiority in the scrums and lineouts gave them an ample supply of ball which lively scrum half D Bishop fed to the threequarters at every opportunity.

With A Woollam in sparkling form and the electric running of P Lewis and J Woodward, Minehead created a series of breaks that left Castle Cary's defence in ruins while wingers T Pilcher and P Woontoon, and replacement R Maddock, opened at every opportunity.

Minehead only came under pressure on a few occasions but sound work from Minehead's solid front row of T Kelvey, R Gay and E Maddock, with R Smith's tireless efforts in the loose, kept Castle Cary's forward movements to a minimum, and in form fly half J Littlefield gave a masterly display with his line kicking.

Minehead will hope to find the same form when they travel to tougher opponents Ivel Barbarians tomorrow.

Minehead's try scorers were J Littlefield, J Woodward (2), P Lewis, T Pilcher (2), D Bishop, P Disney, B Baker (2), P Sullivan and R Maddock, with conversions from B Baker (2), J Woodward (2) and J Littlefield.
