SIR — Like many Christians in Minehead, I was both relieved and privileged to attend the Installation of the new vicar of the parish, the Rev Penny Dobbin at St Michael's last Saturday.

The parish tasked me with forming an ecumenical choir to back the installation service and I have to say what a heart-warming experience it has been to work with so many talented and loyal singers.

It was truly ecumenical with singers from the Baptist Fellowship, the Methodists, the Roman Catholics, the Salvation Army and parishioners of course.

Together, including eight singers from the vicar's former parish, we numbered 41 and the challenge was to fit them into the 21 seats in the choir stalls - we spilled out each side and seated everyone – just!

My task as director was made much easier with the help of Phyll Barclay and Evelyn Smith as rehearsal accompanists and the support of Luke Moore as assistant organist.

I have only praise for the singers who gave up most of their August Thursday evenings; to everyone involved I give my heartfelt thanks.

Plans are now at an advanced stage to reinstate the parish choir for services at St Michael's.

Are there any former members (or newcomers) who are willing to commit themselves to worshipping with us at St Michael's on the first and third Sundays every month?

I would welcome new members, but it would be a tremendous advantage if you could sing!

An ability to read music is desirable but not essential as a limited amount of coaching would be given.

I can be contacted on 01643 709907.

Gordon D G Niccolls,

Director of Music,

The Parish of Minehead.
