FEARS have been allayed that a popular Exmoor tourist bus service would be scrapped after a slump in passenger numbers last year.
First Bus relies on subsidies from Somerset Council and Devon County Council to keep running its Exmoor Explorer bus, which was rebranded in 2025 after previously being called the Exmoor Coaster.
But, fewer people used the service last year due to open top buses being replaced with closed top vehicles for the season over fears overhanging trees posed a danger to passengers.
Both councils said they had not been given sufficient notice to carry out tree works to remove the dangerous branches in time for the season.
Now, however, First Bus has confirmed the service will return in May, although there was no official confirmation of open top buses being used on the Exmoor coast route from Minehead via Porlock and Lynton to Ilfracombe.
Exmoor farmer and campaigner James Wright welcomed the Exmoor Explorer’s return as good news for the area’s visitor trade.
Mr Wright said: “I was worried we would not see it back.
“The return of the Exmoor Coaster is a boost for our local economy.
“It is an important link that supports local businesses, and allows visitors to experience the breathtaking beauty of our moorland and coastal landscape.”
Mr Wright said tourism was worth more than £700 million a year to businesses in the greater Exmoor area.
He said: “The council and First Bus must ensure that the topless bus service returns alongside enclosed double deckers when weather allows, to maximise enjoyment for visitors.”
The service is expected to run from late May through to the end of August with fares capped by the Government at £3 one-way.
First Bus has not yet published an official 2026 timetable for the Exmoor Explorer service.
