ALCOHOL designation zones in West Somerset look set to be extended to include Watchet's War Memorial, Henry Davy Playing Field and South Road as well as The Esplanade. The zones will enable police officers to order people to stop drinking, confiscate alcohol and even arrest drinkers who fail to comply. A rise in incidents of anti-social behaviour in both Blenheim Gardens in Minehead and Williton's Memorial Ground initially sparked calls for additional police powers to be introduced. West Somerset Council was then asked to extend the zones to also include Minehead seafront between Warren Road and Quay Street, the town's Rose Garden adjacent to Seaward Way, King George recreation ground, the recreation area alongside Irnham Road but excluding the football club and land adjacent to Seaward Way and Bircham Road to the north-west of Ellicombe roundabout. In addition, Bellamy's Corner in Williton was also declared an alcohol designation zone, together with Alcombe's Cross Farm Park and the SureStart building in the King George Playing Field, Alcombe. Members of the council's cabinet will be asked to include Watchet in the scheme when they meet next Wednesday.
