A SERIOUS crash which closed the A358 between Williton and Bishops Lydeard on Wednesday (September 30) saw one casualty taken to hospital in Taunton.

A lorry and a car were believed to have been involved in the collision at Trebles Holford, near West Bagborough, shortly after 6.30 am.

There was a large emergency services response and the A358 was shut from New Road to the Farmer’s Arms.

An air ambulance was called due to the serious nature of the incident, and South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) also sent three double-crewed land ambulances, two operations officers, and a hazardous area response team to the scene.

A SWASFT spokesperson told the Free Press: “We conveyed one patient by land ambulance to Musgrove Park Hospital.”

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue sent two fire engines and a specialist rescue vehicle to assist with the operation.

Avon and Somerset Police advised motorists to look for alternative routes if travelling into or out of West Somerset.

Minor roads in the area quickly became choked with traffic.

The A358 was expected to remain closed for several hours as police accident scene investigators completed their work.

First Bus said its buses would terminate at Bishops Lydeard in one direction and Williton in the other.

The West Somerset Railway has offered free travel on its trains between Bishops Lydeard and Watchet for local people, who should show proof of address when arriving at the stations.
