SIR — Following the letter 'How could this happen?' (Free Press April 18), I do hope the little dog mentioned recovered from its injuries. My dog has been attacked by the same dog twice. Both instances my dog was on a lead and under control. The other dog was unleashed. On the first occasion my dog was walking beside me on the lead when this dog made a direct dash for mine and proceeded with a full-on assault. I tried to pick up my dog and nearly got bitten by the other dog in the process. Whilst all this was happening, the dog's owner didn't try to intervene or call their dog off - they just stood, watched and said nothing. After I managed to get my dog away, there was no concern shown or apology from the owner. When this dog attacked the second time, it dashed out of a field and immediately attacked my dog. The owner again didn't call their dog (even hearing all the commotion) and only came out of the field when I started crying for help. In its frenzy the attacking dog ran out into the road and caused a near miss with a vehicle. Two men, who I want to say a massive thank you to, came running over and helped get the dog away from mine. My dog was left with multiple puncture wounds to his hindquarters and a very large deep wound on his flank. Both times my dog had to receive veterinary treatment. I can't understand why owners don't take their responsibilities seriously. If you have a problem dog you should be doing everything possible to re-train the dog or keep them on a lead, muzzled (if necessary) and under control all the time while in public places. Why put our canine companions in danger? Name and address supplied.
