A BARN in Stogumber was “beyond saving” despite the efforts of crews from three fire stations last night.

Several members of the public called 999 as they could see the 20 by 20 metre barn, containing straw bales, on fire on a farm in Preston Lane.

Fire engines from Williton, Wiveliscombe and Cullompton, together with a water carrier from Bridgwater, went to the scene at around 5.30pm and four hours later were preventing its spread to buildings and a silage pit.

“The barn was well alight on our arrival and was soon confirmed as beyond saving, despite our best efforts to save it,” said a spokesman.

“It was then the aim of our crews to start protecting the surrounding area and buildings.”

By 9pm, the crews were making “good and steady” progress preventing the fire’s spread and they called for relief crews to assist in the ongoing operation.
