WATCHET Town's fixture away to Wells City Reserves in the Premier Division of the Uhlsport Somerset County Football League last Saturday was postponed owing to the Red & Blacks being unable to raise a side for the first time in memory.

With seven first team squad players attending a wedding, three on holiday, and two injured, and a few with work commitments, the difficult and disappointing decision was taken to call the match off with a fine and points deduction to follow.

The club is now making use of a new clause introduced by the County League aimed at helping those with internal changes and a shortage of players to prevent possible withdrawals at this late stage whereby it is permissible to postpone three fixtures in a row, with punishment only applying to the first of those cancellations, allowing time and leeway for problems to potentially be resolved.

It is therefore hoped that Watchet will be able to resume their programme on Saturday, September 13, when they are due to play their first home match of the season against Nailsea United, who beat the Red & Blacks 9-2 on August 2nd.

In their only other showing so far Watchet lost 3-0 at Chard and remain in need of new players with the aim to field two teams when their Reserves begin their campaign in the Taunton & District Saturday League Division 2 in September. It is hoped that the West Somerset club will get the support they deserve and can overcome their problems

From next week training will be on Wednesdays only from 6.30pm at the Memorial Ground. Matchday volunteer helpers would also be most welcome and further discussions between committee officials were due to take place on Thursday evening of this week with a view to the way forward.
