ALTHOUGH the football season is far from over, Watchet Town's manager Avril Cooke is already making plans for the start of the next campaign.

"We shall be reporting back for pre-season training earlier - in June," she said this week. "We will have a physical programme set out for the opening six weeks.

"We will have a lot of youngsters with the club next season - and it is important we all have the same way of playing.

"I also think we will have two bigger squads than this season - we have been able to bring in more players this season. We should have two stable squads."

Meanwhile, the Uhlsport Somerset County League have extended the season to May 13 to help clubs who have fallen behind with their fixtures.

"Unfortunately, it's not going to be much help to us," added Cooke. "Some players will have made arrangements to go away, and cricket will get underway.

"It's surprising the number of lads who play cricket. Some may wish to keep playing football, but others may want to switch to the summer game.

"You can't blame those going on holiday because they would not have known when they booked that the season would be extended."

Meanwhile, Watchet's Premier Division game at Clutton last Saturday was called off because of a waterlogged pitch.

Watchet had been forced to 'replay' the fixture at Clutton even though they had led 3-0 on the same ground three weeks ago with not long to go.

"The lads felt the points should have been awarded to us - but the FA did not think so," added Cooke. "It was a disappointing decision for us, particularly as we are so close in the league table."
