DESPITE not playing for the past two Saturdays, Wiveliscombe are still five points clear at the top of Counties One Western West - and also have a game in hand on second placed Paignton.

Wiveliscombe were due to play at home to Saltash on Saturday, January 24, but the match at The Rec was called off because of a waterlogged pitch. It came as no surprise after a week of heavy rain making the pitch unplayable.

Only one game was played in the division - Plymstock Oaks going down 23-10 at home to Truro who are now up to fourth in the table.

Meanwhile, Wiveliscombe have no match this coming Saturday, January 31, and nor have their main rivals Paignton. Third-placed Kingsbridge play at Saltash but they cannot improve on their position because they trail Paignton by eight points. Fixtures: Barnstaple v St Ives, Redruth v Truro, Saltash v Kingsbridge.

Wiveliscombe 2nd XV were due to play away to leaders Tor in Counties Three Somerset South on Saturday, January 24, but this game, too, was postponed because of the wet weather.

No games were played in this division which means that Tor remain 11 points clear of their rivals - with eight matches still to play. However, second-placed Wells have three matches in hand on Tor and still have a 100 per cent record for the season.

Wiveliscombe are down in tenth spot, having won three of their 11 fixtures. They still have 11 matches to play in this division.

Wellington are bottom of the table, having won only one of their 13 matches - at home to Wiveliscombe earlier this month.

Wiveliscombe’s second string will be in action this weekend, weather permitting, when they play at home to Martock who are lying seventh (2.15p.m.).

Fixtures: Hornets v Crewkerne, North Petherton v Chard, Wellington v Bridgwater & Albion, Wyvern v Weston super Mare, Wiveliscombe v Martock.
