WIVELISCOMBE secured their first win of the season since promotion to Regional Two South West when they beat Sherborne 22-5 in a four-try bonus points victory, writes Roger Bellamy.
Played in heavy rain throughout, handling was difficult but underfoot conditions were perfect with both teams looking to run the ball when the opportunity arose.
Playing down the slope in the first half Sherborne were soon testing Wiveliscombe’s defence using their large forwards to hold home side close to their try line which eventually resulted in a try for No8 Aaron Cole, who enjoyed a fine all-round game. The conversion was missed.
Sherborne came close to adding to their one try but Wiveliscombe’s defence was solid enough and it was the home team who crossed for their first try of the game with hooker Tom Stone driven over by his fellow forwards, The conversion was missed.
Play continued to focus around the forwards of both teams with the three quarters struggling to make progress in the increasing down pour. Wivey’s driving mauls became a problem for Sherborne as the second half progressed and the home team’s forwards added another three tries through Stone, his second, fellow front row, prop Matthew Ellis and No8 Callum Lane. Winger Jack Lee added one conversion.
This success left Wiveliscombe ninth in Regional Two South West with 11 points.
Wiveliscombe 2nd XV also gained their first victory of the season in a Somerset Three League match, beating Chard 2nd XV 20-5 - also at home. Tries were scored by hooker Ashley Irvine, Kieran Williams Carr and centre Thomas Lally. Cameron Palk added one conversion and one penalty.
