WIVELISCOMBE gained a 17-10 home win over near-neighbours Bridgwater & Albion in the first round of the RFU Community Cup, writes Roger Bellamy.
A close game was anticipated with both teams playing at the same level in the SW league structure, with Wiveliscombe in the West section and Bridgwater in the North.
Wiveliscombe were never behind in this match. Playing up the slope Wiveliscombe took.an early lead after creating space on the blind side of a maul for winger Tom Lally to score in the Oak Tree corner. Flyhalf Dan Quick produced an excellent conversion from wide out.
Bridgwater produced some decent spells of pressure in the first half with their forwards in particular creating chances near Wivey’s try line. They scored their first try from one of these situations with second row Tom west grounding near the post.
Wiveliscombe increased their lead with Quick slotting a penalty after a Bridgwater high tackle.
Chances were created by teams but the visitors levelled the score just before halftime with a try from flanker Aiden Cable.
The second half became disjointed as both teams struggled to produce any continuity. An increasingly strong wind didn't help but the fact that only one try was scored was evident of the struggle both teams had to create any decent scoring opportunities. Wiveliscombe crossed for that one try with Quick evading several Bridgwater tackles to cross near the post. Quick added the conversion.
