WIVELISCOMBE beat Truro 23-5 at home to secure their 11th victory of the season, keeping them in top position in Counties One Western West, writes Roger Bellamy.

However, Wiveliscombe were made to work hard with mid table Truro having their fair share of possession and territory but lacked the finishing touch of the home team.

Playing up the slope in the first half Wiveliscombe gained a 6-0 lead when Truro were penalised twice with in five minutes allowing fly half Dan Quick to give Wiveliscombe the lead with two penalties.

Wiveliscombe captain Will Ellis increased the home team’s lead following good pressure from his fellow forwards to score the first try of the game, Quick converting to give Wiveliscombe a 13pts 0pt lead at halftime.

Truro started the second half well, especially through theirr forwards with well organised driving mauls and reduced Wiveliscombe’s lead to eight points with a try from No 8 Cameron Richards for a 13-5 scoreline.

The visitors defence continued to give Wiveliscombe opportunities and a third penalty converted by Quick gave Wivey a 16pts 5pts lead.

Wiveliscombe had produced the odd opportunity down the top touch line with their threes stretching the visitors’ defence on several occasions, Centre Will Thorne took advantage of one of these opportunities to score Wivey’s second try of the game. Quick converted to secure Wiveliscombe’s tenth successive League victory of the season and they top the table by seven points from second-placed Paignton.

Meanwhile, Wiveliscombe 2nd XV travelled to neighbours Wellington for a Counties 3 Tribute Ale Somerset South League match hoping to produce another Boxing Day result but a stronger home team took the honours 49-13 on this occasion.
