A BRILLIANT day of girls’ rugby unfolded at Minehead Barbarians at the weekend, showcasing not only talent and determination but the true spirit of the game.
The opening fixture saw two touring sides take to the field, with Sidmouth bolstered by two Minehead players and playfully dubbed “Minemouth” delivering an impressive performance against Chew Valley.
Despite Sidmouth’s control and clinical finishing, Chew Valley showed admirable resilience, battling to the final whistle and earning a well deserved score late on.
Next up, Minehead Under 12s demonstrated tremendous grit and teamwork in a fiercely contested match. Powerful carries and fearless tackling set the tone, as they edged a closely fought encounter. A special mention goes to the Minehead girls who represented Chew Valley for the fixture, showing outstanding sportsmanship giving their all against familiar teammates.
The final game of the day saw Minehead Under 14s face a highly organised and physical Chard RFC side. At the break, Minehead trailed 33–7, despite producing some outstanding defensive efforts.
What followed was a remarkable turnaround. Inspired by a passionate half-time talk from captain J. Swann leading from the front row just like her father, the team returned with renewed belief and intensity.
The second half was nothing short of electrifying, with sharp interceptions, fluid offloading, and relentless attacking rugby reminiscent of the elite level. Minehead surged back into contention, closing the gap to 40–33. With only minutes remaining, a momentary lapse allowed Chard to produce a try, making it 40–38 and setting up a dramatic finish. The conversion attempt to level the match struck the crossbar, leaving Minehead to hold on for a thrilling victory.
Beyond the results, the day was a celebration of girls’ rugby at its very best. Players, coaches, and supporters stayed on after the final whistle, building friendships and memories that extend far beyond the pitch: an embodiment of everything the game stands for.
