MINEHEAD Barbarians Colts were 42-38 away winners over Wellington in an exciting and high scoring game played in good spirits, with the balance of play swinging one way and then the other.
With a number of Barbarians players unavailable for this match, it was impressive to see the level of effort the team produced. Sam Lock led his team by example, repeatedly carrying hard through tackles and giving good ball to his supporting forwards. The Barbarians Colts managed to score six tries, and all of them were converted, five by Ahern, and the final one by Clavey. A number of tries were created by the elusive running of scrum-half Browne, who linked up particularly well with back row colleague White. Much of Minehead’s ball came from some fine lineout work between hooker Norrish, and Grigg his jumper. While Haller, Tanner, and Reeder combined well to keep their pack on the front foot. Behind the scrum, Clavey used his footwork, while Lynch and Jeanes were powerful with the ball in hand. Hughes was kept busy sweeping around the backfield to tidy up balls kicked through. Both teams found more success in their attacking, than in their defence, which kept the scoreboard ticking over! The Barbarians built a good lead in the first half, ahead 28-12 at the break. Only for the Wellington side to fight back and close the gap between the two sides. Minehead were also hampered in the final quarter when Ahern was forced off with a leg injury. With the game in the balance, Browne took a tap-penalty and his pass put White in for the vital score, with Clavey adding the extra points to make the game safe. This was an entertaining match, between two very well matched sides. Minehead Barbarians try scorers – White 3, Browne 2, Haller. Barbarian Player of the Day Sam Lock
