THE big Boxing Day fixture between Wiveliscombe and Wellington at The Rec was called off today over fears about Covid-19.

In a brief statement, the Wiveliscombe club said: “The executive committee has discussed Boxing Day’s games. In light of recent Covid developments, it has been decided to cancel both matches - lsts and 2nds. The Wellington club has been informed."

The cancellation not only means disappointment for the clubs but also spectators. The Wiveliscombe club would also expect to take thousands of pounds from gate receipts and the clubhouse bar.

Wiveliscombe’s chairman Jake Sharland said: “The safety of everyone has to take priority over profits. We are all very disappointed but that’s the way the world is at the moment.

“It is a lot of risk for everyone - and I think people will understand. We will just have to look forward to the next derby match which will be staged at Wellington next year."

Wellington coach Allyn Chetland said: “It must have been a very difficult decision for Wiveliscombe to make and we respect them for that. At least last year it was not our decision - it was made for us. Everyone knows the situation and they can make alternative arrangements.”

The match at Wellington last year was also called off because of Covid-19. The last game between the sides at Wiveliscombe two seasons ago ended in a 14-14 draw. Previous to this, Wellington had the better of games.
