WATCHET Town go into their last match of the season away to Clutton today (Sat) knowing that whatever the result they will almost certainly be playing in the first division of the Uhlsport Somerset County League next season.

Watchet stalwart and assistant manager Nick Sully said: "Only an unexpected twist in the league constitution for next season can save the Red & Blacks after a 15-year stay at this level where they have often finished in the upper reaches, including being champions in 2017."

Watchet are lying second from bottom - and will finish in this position - and are currently four points adrift of Clutton who are the next side above them.

Today's game is a 'replay' of a fixture in which Watchet were winning 3-0 last time they met.

"We've always felt we should have been awarded the game," said Watchet manager Avril Cooke. "It's a game the lads feel they shouldn't be playing."

The match at Clutton was about 30 minutes from the end when the home side's goakeeper was injured - and Clutton decided they did not want to play on. Since then the league have ordered the match should be 'replayed.'

Minehead also play their last match of the season in the first division when they meet Winscombe away, chasing a six-day double, having beaten the same opposition 3-0 at home on Monday. George Sinnott, Artur Jacaszek and Rob Vickers scored for Minehead.

Watchet's relegation - which still has to be confirmed by the league - means that the two West Somerset sides will play each other in a league match twice next season, guaranteeing two bumper crowds.

The irony is that neither side expected to be playing in the first division next season. Minehead began the season hopeful of promotion to the Premier Division, while Watchet felt they were good enough to at least finish mid-table in the top flight.
