MINEHEAD Tennis Club’s annual finals day on Sunday September 11. which featured eight matches, was blessed with warm, sunny weather.

The first games on were the men’s and ladies’ singles, played on adjacent courts.

Mason See was up against Ricardo Sanchez, who recently returned to the club after several years, and in a hard-fought contest with some great, extended rallies, Mason prevailed 6-3, 6-4.

Last year there were insufficient entries for the ladies’ singles to be held, but that wasn’t the case this year, and stalwart Judy Kay found herself up against Katherine Tilke.

The two play as the club’s first pair in the North Somerset Ladies’ League and won all but one of their matches this summer, but in their singles final, young Katherine was the stronger, winning 6-0, 6-2.

Mason and Katherine paired up in the mixed doubles for the third consecutive year, playing Steve Hunt and Emma Stacey, and eased to another victory 6-1, 6-3.

A, B and C team league players are excluded from the Dot Redd Tournament, but it is open to any other members, and for the second year, Brian Cook featured in the final, this time partnering Helen Gorman against Dennis Hill and Christine Kowalski. After a tight first set, 6-4, Dennis and Christine also took the second 6-1.

In the men’s doubles, Steve Hunt and Simon Barmby King played Ed Stenner and Keiryn Evans in an enjoyable match, another straight sets result which went to Steve and Simon 6-1, 6-3.

The ladies’ doubles saw Katherine Tilke and Clare Pound romp through the first set 6-1 against Judy Kay and Emma Stacey but were taken the distance in the second set before winning the tie break 7-6. - Katherine’s third win of the afternoon.!

The best-contested match was the men’s singles plate between Steve Hunt and Bill Butcher, with Steve eventually coming through 6-2, 4-6, 6-4! after nearly two hours.

The mixed doubles’ plate saw Maggie Rutty partner Ricardo Sanchez against Christine Kowalski and Graham Boswell, and after the latter pair went 3-1 up, Maggie and Ricardo turned the match round and took the first set 7-5 then the second 6-0.

Club preident Bob Pye presented the winners’ trophies and plaques for the six main events, and the plate winners will receive their mementoes at the annual dinner in November.
