WEST Somerset virtually ensured promotion from Division Three of the Somerset Squash League when they beat Yeovil 15-4 on Monday.

The team have won all six of their league matches so far and are clear at the top of the table.

They play their last one of the year on Monday away to Huish Episcopi II and are set to play in Division Two after Christmas.

Monday’s match saw them win four of the five rubbers and featured a masterful display from Tom Westcott, who proved too accurate and tactically astute for former Somerset no 1 Andy Hatch.

Sam Price also beat a Somerset player, Jack Frost, in a fast and physically demanding game.

Results: Sam Price beat Jack Frost 3-0, Tom Westcott beat Andy Hatch 3-1, Dave Hillier lost 3-0 to Mark Whitchurch, Jonathan Reed beat Keiron Hatch 3-0, and Luke Howells beat Tony Phillips 3-0.

The team have benefited this autumn from the return of Sam Price from Aberdeen University, coupled with the arrival of Luke Howells, who has joined the club from Dulverton.

Ralph Gale plays a key role in his support and organisation of the team, and the club has also been helped by sponsor Singer Instruments from Roadwater, who have provided new team shirts.

The club is now hoping to work more closely with the West Somerset Leisure Centre 1610 and have the dilapidated courts refurbished in order to be able to host some of the better Somerset teams when promotion is achieved.

It also wants to run a second team after Christmas.

Club night is on Thursdays and all abilities are welcome to go and enjoy a game (7.20pm start)
