MINEHEAD & West Somerset Hockey Club Ladies travelled to Bridgwater for a friendly last Saturday before the league season gets under way - and they returned with a 2-0 victory over the home club’s second team.
With a squad mixed with new and familiar faces, the game provided an opportunity to play a competitive game together for the first time. It proved a good workout for both the home and away sides.
Both teams started carefully, getting the feel for the pitch and stringing together some good passages of play. The deadlock was broken when a rebound off the Bridgwater keeper was slotted into the goal by Amy Tisshaw.
Minehead kept the pressure on Bridgwater throughout the second half and were rewarded with another rebound goal, this time coming from Zoey Cape in the dying minutes of the game. A close Player of the Match vote went to Gemma Chilcott who was outstanding throughout the game.
Minehead Ladies team: Saphie Haddon, Kate Lancaster, Gemma Chilcott, Zoey Cape, Jan Weetch, Hannah Sparks, Tracey Bailey, Charlotte Hirons, Alice Thomas, Jess Koppa, Amy Tisshaw, Georgie Tilley, Jen Cook.
Minehead & West Somerset Hockey Club league matches begin this coming weekend (27th September) with the Ladies travelling to Barnstaple for a 12pm push back. All support is appreciated and new faces are always welcome at our training sessions on Tuesdays, 7-8:30pm at West Somerset College.
*It was announced in early July that the Minehead Men’s and Ladies Hockey Clubs had successfully merged into a ‘single entity,’ calling itself Minehead & West Somerset Hockey Club.
They will field the usual three men’s sides and the one ladies team, with the intention of adding social mixed hockey matches as the new 2025-26 hockey season progresses.
