MINEHEAD & West Somerset Hockey Club have held their Charity Seven-a-side Summer League on the Astro pitch at West Somerset College over the last six Tuesday evenings of July and August.

Yet again, they were blessed with dry weather throughout the entire competition, with the warm temperatures no doubt contributing to an extremely high turnout of players, both from Minehead Hockey Club, local returners-to-hockey, and members of other local clubs joining in for some great sport and socialising.

Matches took place in a round-robin format with everyone playing at least one 25-minute match each week. Finals were held on the 25th August with the Red team led by James Matthews coming out eventual winners on goal difference after a very close contest with Blacks on the final evening.

With players contributing to the Charity pot each week and the proceeds split between the winner and runner-up teams, Minehead were able to raise £817 for the Somerset Air Ambulance as the Red team’s chosen charity, with White’s second place earning them a £408 contribution to the Freddie Pring Memorial Fund which was set up following the tragic death of talented sportsman Freddie at the age of only 20.

Such a summer event has been a great way of spending the close season keeping fit - and also socialising with not only club members but with players from other teams. It is a unique experience and one which players look forward to each summer.

After a hugely successful 2026 season the club is on the look out for more players of all standards as two men’s teams were promoted and the Ladies look to secure their position in the Sedgemoor Division.

The whole club will now train on a Tuesday evening from 1930 to 2100 hours, giving more time for skills, fitness and match-day preparation.
