MINEHEAD and West Somerset Golf Club Seniors were welcomed by a cooler breeze when they made their way to the first tee on Monday to play a 4BBB competition.
Despite the efforts of the groundstaff to keep the greens and parts of the course well-watered, several of the fairways are taking on the appearance of the Savannah and have the texture of concrete.
To the golfer, the latest challenge is therefore to judge how much run-on there is for any given shot. The pairing of Mark Watson and Mike Hynes had little trouble in that direction, winning the competition with an excellent 44 points. In second place with 43 points were Mark Ruttley and John Burrow while Doug Hayhoe and Rick Milliship took third position on countback with 41 points.
The mid-week home friendly match between Minehead Seniors and Tiverton Seniors finished in a 4-1 win for the home side.
Perfect course and weather conditions were the order of the day for the Seniors’ White Tee Stableford competition on Friday.
Unsurprisingly, there were several excellent scores in what proved to be a very close finish. Fraser Lawrence took the honours on count back with 41 points, ahead of Steve Gay, while Neville Parsons managed once again to confound the pundits and finish third with 40 points.
Also, recently, the Seniors played for the Dixies Bogey Qualifier - a hugely popular competition which drew a full tee sheet and resulted in a very close finish.
Three players returned a score of +5, but after count back the winner was Deano Carlin, the runner up was Steve Woodbury with Andy Hodgson taking third place. Despite the intense heat both Deano and Steve carded their best rounds ever.
Deano scored a gross 81 (nett 66) and Steve managed a gross 73 (nett 64).
