MINEHEAD & West Somerset’s Seniors took to the first tee on Monday to play a Bowmaker, at the end of which the deserved winners with 81 points were Doug Hayhoe, Tiny Welford and John Burrow, John displaying some excellent form particularly on the front nine. In second place with 77 points were Karl Granger, Dave Walmsley and Mike Kelly while Mark Ruttley, Trevor Stephens and Steve Gay were third with 75.
The Seniors played for the Roy Bishop Trophy on Friday - a medal off the white tees when none of the 27 entrants broke par. Seniors’ captain Chris Durman took the honours on countback with a one over par nett 73, ahead of Sandy Lyons. Third place on countback with nett 74 was claimed by Rob Poirrier with Dave Oatridge fourth.
On Saturday, Minehead & West Somerset Golf Club welcomed members and visitors alike to the final Open competition of the year when 140 entrants took part in the Men’s Texas Scramble.
The course was in excellent condition and the 35 teams took to the first tee with expectations of scoring well. Scoring certainly exceeded expectations as Daniel Barnes, Paul Herne (both Vivary Park GC), Ethan Manning (Taunton & Pickeridge GC) and Jonathon Welch (Vivary Park GC) won the competition with nett 51. In second place with nett 53 were Jack Beal, Mike Beal, Michael Hollick and Chris Watson (all Minehead GC) while Thomas Michael Broom (Brean GC), Freddie Ferrari (Weston-super-Mare GC), Oliver Poole (Worlebury GC) and Samuel Poole (Worlebury GC) came third with nett 54.
Grateful thanks to all the volunteers on the day, together with the front of house and catering staff who all contributed so much to the success of the event. Many of the visiting teams mentioned that they sign up for this event annually and it was a pleasure to welcome everyone and look forward to their return next year.
