DURING the course of the summer months, the Seniors section at Minehead and West Somerset Golf Club have played a considerable number of friendly matches during which they have enjoyed some excellent form - and there have been some very good results.
Sadl,y these matches are now drawing to a close although Minehead & West Somerset continued their run of success with a narrow 3.5-2.5 victory away at Oake Manor Golf Club recently.
The result means that Minehead & West Somerset win the Jasper Trophy which is played for between the two local clubs with the best aggregate score, home and away, taking the trophy.
Meanwhile the Seniors section played a Florida Scramble on Wednesday and in a close result the team of Tom Gliddon, Mike Kelly and Peter Young took the honours on countback with nett 69 from John Burrow, Roger Read and Graham Troman who narrowly lost out. Third place with nett 71 went to Bob Arthington, Malcolm Bruce and Nigel Trevelyan.
With the weather reverting to summer like conditions on Friday, another full entry signed up for the Seniors sectiojn’s Thistle Trophy, a white tee Stableford format. Two of the newest members managed to take the first two places with Adrian Girdlestone winning the trophy with 38 points, ahead of Peter Chapple in second position with 37, while Andy Giles was third with 36.
Meanwhile, the Ladies Autumn Meeting at Enmore Park Golf Club saw 36 entrants taking part in the last major competition of the year, with three cups being contested by the players.
The course was in good condition following much-needed rainfall, and the greens were relatively fast. Some players overcame the challenges and played exceptionally well to achieve excellent scores despite the mixed weather conditions.
The winner of Division One and the Barrington Cup with 36 points was Shanni Whisler, who was three clear of second placed Heather Neale with 33, while Rachel Johnson was third with 31.
Kay Taylor won Division Two and the King's Cup with 34 points, Anne Weston was second with 32, and Susan Hockley was third with 29.
The 9-hole Leffman Bowl winner was Karen Dicks with 18 points, with runner-up Ann Morrison in second place, just ahead of third-placed Linda Moore, who also ended with 13 points. All the winners were presented with excellent prizes provided by Lorraine Taylor, the Lady Captain.
Enmore Park Seniors played two matches during last week, starting with an away match against their Isle of Wedmore counterparts on Monday. With high winds, storms, and rain threatening, it was a pleasant surprise to only have three brief heavy downpours and blustery winds during the round. Challenging conditions, which favoured the home team with their local knowledge of the course and greens, proved decisive and Wedmore came out as the winners 5 - 1, with the winning pair for Enmore being Chris Willsteed and Adrian Winter.
On Thursday, Enmore faced Long Ashton, who ran out the winners 4-2. The Enmore winning pairs were Wayne Edmondson with Peter Scott and Chris Willsteed with Dave Keates, while the nearest the pin was won by Wayne Edmondson. Bob Read won Saturday's Pro Shop Medal with nett 70, one ahead of second-placed Lee Lewis, while Sean Jones claimed third with 72.
