MINEHEAD and West Somerset Golf Club Seniors’ golfing week commenced with the remnants of the second storm blowing through.
Wet and windy conditions prevailed throughout the competition despite which they donned the sou’westers and galoshes and stoically faced the course.
Peter Chapple led the charge, winning with 32 points, a score indicative of the conditions. Three players scored 31 points with Paul Saunders taking second place on countback, ahead of Karl Granger and Rick Milliship.
Much improved conditions awaited the Seniors 4BBB midweek competition. An outstanding performance returning 47 points by the winning pair of Mark Swallow and Karl Granger decimated the opposition, both clearly benefitting from the sun on their backs. Second place with 40 points went to Bob Arthington and Paul Saunders while John Perkins and Neville Parsons claimed third position with 36 points.
The final competition of the week, a 231 waltz, was well supported. The front nine unusually played the more difficult in what were good conditions.
It was the final two teams which took the honours, led by Rob Poirrier, Dave Walmsley and Peter Allerton who scored 73 points. Second place with 68 points went to Willie Brown, John Perkins and Tony Connolly. In third position on countback with 63 points were Martin Hole, Dave Oatridge and Neville Parsons, ahead of Roger Read, Andy Giles and Dave Ball.
Meanwhile, there were no competitions played at Oake Manor Golf Club last weekend due to the rain and storms. Some brave seniors played on Monday in a Stableford Competition for the Grandads Cup. Any Senior could enter but only ones with blood related grandchildren are eligible to win the cup; also extra points were added to their score depending on the number of grandchildren.
Andy Stevenson won division 1, scoring 37 points with Michael Bright in second place with 33 points and Glyn Pearce in third place with 31 points. Charles Groom won division 2 with 39 points, the best score of the day, while Mike Sheppard came second with 33 points and Howard Spear was third also with 33 points. Mike Sheppard won the Grandads Cup being the highest placed Grandad.
Phil Coggins won the Wednesday Midweek Stableford Competition with 39 points while Dylan Nation came second with 38 points and Andy Cooper was third, also on 38 points.
