IT HAS been another very busy week in the Minehead and West Somerset Golf Club’s calendar.

Minehead Men’s Scratch team had won through to the prestigious Pickeridge Bowl Final played at Burnham & Berrow GC. The match against current holders Worlebury was played in atrocious conditions. With almost all of the five matches going down to the wire, Worlebury claimed the silverware with a 3.5/1.5 victory to retain the trophy.

Congratulations to everyone who represented the Minehead team and for what they have achieved this year; also, to team Captain Simon Rudd for organizing the campaign so efficiently. Despite the conditions, the Minehead team were well supported on the day. Grateful thanks to Burnham & Berrow GC for hosting an excellent final.

On the domestic front congratulations to Archie Walsh (+2) who broke the Minehead course record in last Saturday’s Club Stableford competition. Archie recorded a 63 (8 under par) to claim the new men’s amateur course record. His round included an eagle on the par 5, 16th and six birdies; not a bogey in sight.

Congratulations also to Mark Watson for winning the Seniors’ C2 match play summer knock out trophy. In a closely fought final Mark narrowly defeated Tony Connolly.

With another fine week in prospect, Minehead Seniors began with a 123 Waltz competition. In quite dominant form, the team of Richard Austwick, Chris Durman and Peter Chapple returned a score of 85 points to win decisively. Mark Watson, Bob Arthington and Neville Parsons were second with 70 points ahead of Martin Hole, Malcolm Bruce and Nick Garman with 69 points.

Minehead Seniors played Taunton & Pickeridge in an away friendly match this week and managed a 3.5/2.5 victory to record an overall 7-5 win for the year.

The midweek Seniors’ Foursomes competition was won in fine style by Peter Allerton and Peter Chapple with nett 66. In second place were Neville Parsons and Roger Green (nett 68) while ‘Tiny’ Welford and Nigel Trevelyan were third on countback (nett 70) ahead of Dave Ball and Rick Milliship.

The highlight of the Seniors’ week was an aggregate 4bbb competition between the Young Seniors and Old Seniors. With much prestige at stake, this turned out to be a closely fought contest with each of the nine pairings giving no quarter.

With some excellent scoring on both sides, the Young Seniors narrowly won the match by 322 – 314 points. A return match is guaranteed.

The previous week, Minehead Seniors played a Pinehurst Greensomes competition. Steve Gay and Sandy Lyons clearly relished the novelty of a prolonged shower, recording a nett 65 to win the event.

In second place with nett 68 were Mark Ruttley and Malcolm Bruce, while Graham Troman and Tony Connolly were third on countback (nett 69) ahead of Rick Milliship and Roger Read.

Round One of the Seniors white tee 36-hole Medal competition was played in midweek. Well into the round the heavens opened, Steering a steady ship, the winners of round one were Andy Giles (on countback) and Sandy Lyons who returned an excellent nett 66. Third place went to John Perkins with nett 67.

Round Two was played in much better conditions. The winner on countback with nett 69 was Rick Milliship ahead of John Perkins in second, while Nigel Moore was third with nett 70.
