MINEHEAD Seniors started the week with a Pinehurst Greensomes competition. Steve Gay and Sandy Lyons clearly relished the novelty of a prolonged shower, recording a nett 65 to win the competition.

In second place with nett 68 were Mark Ruttley and Malcolm Bruce, while Graham Troman and Tony Connolly were third on countback (nett 69) ahead of Rick Milliship and Roger Read.

Round 1 of the Seniors white tee 36-hole Medal competition was played midweek. Well into the round, the heavens opened, sufficient to provide a decent soaking over several holes to all players. Steering a steady ship, the winners of round 1 were Andy Giles (on countback) and Sandy Lyons who returned an excellent nett 66. Third place went to John Perkins with nett 67.

Round 2 was played in much better conditions. The winner on countback with nett 69 was Rick Milliship ahead of John Perkins in second, Nigel Moore was third with nett 70.

John Perkins (67+69=136) won the 36-hole competition in fine style. Andy Giles (66+73=139) took second place while Doug Hayhoe (71+73=144) came third. Many congratulations to the winners and with the popularity of the competition it appears very likely that John will have to defend his win in the not too distant future.

Minehead & West Somerset GC hosted the final of the second Somerset Hickory Open Championship. Played in good weather, unbroken sun and a very convivial atmosphere the event proved a huge success.

The 2025 winner Andrew Brown (St Enodoc) had the honour of presenting the trophy to this year’s winner, Dan Sefton (Minehead) who scored 39 points. Second with 36 points was Peter Wilson while Paddy Maclennan (Minehead) claimed third with 35 points. Many congratulations to all the winners and very encouraging to see ‘vintage’ golf proving to be such a popular event in Somerset.
