IT’S BEEN a huge week for Minehead & West Somerset Golf Club with both the men’s and ladies club championships taking place.

The men’s 36-hole competition drew a large entry and was played over the weekend. Dave Hillier (5) hit top form throughout the two rounds, taking the championship title with 73+74 = 147. Runner up was Will Paton (-2) with 76+72 =148 and in third place Archie Walsh (-3) 75+77 =152.

Dave Hillier also managed the double, winning the best nett score 68+69 = 137, ahead of Chris Webber (13) 70+71 = 141. Chris Durman took third place with 73+70 = 143.

The 36-hole ladies’ club championship was played on one of the hottest days proving to be a real test of stamina and concentration. Deano Carlin (13) 82+82 = 164 took the honours and in doing so recorded a total of 41 on both front and back nine on both rounds. Trish Grinter (17) was runner up with 87+98 = 185 while Jenny Elliott (19) 99+98 = 197 came third.

As a result of a superb second round performance, Catharine Binding (35) won the best nett score 73+64 =137, one shot ahead of Deano Carlin 69+69 = 138. Ruth Maclennan (26) took third place with 73+75 =148.

In another busy week for the Seniors the Reverse Waltz winners on count back with 73 points were Graham Troman, Sandy Lyons and Tony Connolly ahead of Jamie Cook, Rick Milliship and Mark Walton. Third place with 72 points was claimed by Richard Austwick, Mark Watson and Karl Granger.

The Seniors’ Dexter Neville yellow tee medal trophy was played on Friday. The greens were lightening quick which brought challenges to the full entry; nevertheless, 15 players managed a par score or better. The winner with an excellent nett 63 was Tim Evans, one shot ahead of Richard Austwick who has hit a rich vein of form. Third place with nett 65 was Neville Parsons.
