MINEHEAD and West Somerset have held a very successful Ladies Captain’s Day. Thirty-four ladies played in a fun competition organised by Pat Lucas, the current captain.
This was an individual Stableford off full handicap (though the competition did not count for handicap). Each player had three life lines. Firstly, to play off purple (new forward) tees; twice on the front nine holes, twice on the back nine. Secondly to score double points on 1 hole. Thirdly to have 1 ‘mulligan’ (a bad shot you don’t have to count).
Winner of Division 1 (for those of handicap 27 or under) was Deano Carlin with 46 points. Winner of Division 2 (handicap 28-40) was Cath Binding with a staggering 50 points. Winner of Division 3 (handicap 41 and over) was Claire Hayhoe with 39 points.
Iris Spence won ‘nearest the pin’ on the 4th. Hilary Eden was ‘nearest the pin’ on the 10th and Claire Hayhoe on the 14th. Highest double points went to Sue Garwood on the 8th hole, and the putting competition was also won by Deano Carlin.
The sum of £227 was raised in donations for the Lady’s Captain Charity ‘St Margaret’s hospice’.
The golf was followed by an excellent buffet for 40, other lady members who had not played in the competition joining.
A home Somerset League match was also played against Isle of Wedmore. Minehead Ladies were victorious winning 6 – 1. The preceding week an away league match was played against Cricket St Thomas. A well fought match resulted in a 5 -2 defeat for the Minehead Ladies. Also at home the Phillps Cup and Daily Mail Qualifier was contended for. The format was foursomes strokeplay (alternate shots). Tricia Grinter and Sarah Hill were victorious with a score of nett 72. They go through to the next round in the area.
