THE first Minehead Seniors’ competition of the week was a Stableford played in sunny conditions with a strengthening wind.

Due to the proliferation of matches currently underway, the number of entrants was smaller, though it did not detract from an excellent performance by Edward Frewin to claim first place with 38 points. Second on count back with 35 points was Sandy Lyons ahead of Tim Tennant in third.

On Tuesday Minehead Seniors played a match at Burnham & Berrow GC resulting in a 5.5/0.5 win to the home side. On the following day the seniors were home to Enmore Park GC and managed a good result, winning 5.0/1.0.

Yet another qualifier Stableford was played on Friday. Taking advantage of the benign conditions early on, Malcolm Bruce continued to hone his unique putting skills anywhere from 100 yards to score a superb 43 points. In second place with 40 points was Andrew Coward while Mike O’Keefe continued his good form with 39 to claim third position.

Saturday saw Enmore Park GC make a second return to Minehead, this time for a men’s match. In a close encounter the result was a 3-3 draw, celebrated by both sides afterwards in the clubhouse.

Meanwhile, the ladies section of Minehead & West Somerset Golf Club competed for the Pontz Cup.

Jennifer James was victorious with a very impressive Stableford score of 48 points, 12 under her handicap of 36. Second was Flora Horne with 39 points, playing three under her handicap of 37.

The annual three-way match between Minehead, Taunton & Pickeridge and Enmore clubs was played at Minehead who won both handicap sections.

Next week Minehead will be competing in the Somerset Roger’s Cup against Mendip Springs on neutral ground at Burnham & Berrow.
